State of Michigan Safety Drill and Cardiac Emergency Response Requirements
Drill Requirements
– A minimum of five (5) fire drills are required for each school year. Three of the five are to be held by December 1 of the school year.
– A minimum of two (2) tornado drills are required for each school year; at least one is to be conducted during March of the school year.
– A minimum of three (3) lockdown drills are required each school year; at least one is to be conducted by December 1 of the school year; at least one is to be conducted after January 1.
– At least one of the ten (10) drills must be held during a lunch or recess period, or at a time when a significant number of students are not gathered in the classroom.
Documentation Requirements
Documentation of a completed school safety drill is to be posted on your school website within 30 days after the drill is completed and maintained on the website for at least three years.
Documentation must include at least:
– Name of the school
– Year of the drill
– Date and Time of the drill
– Number of completed drills for that year
– Signature of the school Principal (or Designee) acknowledging the completion of the drill
Additional Requirements
– Use and regular maintenance of automated external defibrillators
– Activation of a cardiac emergency response team during an identified cardiac emergency
– A plan for effective and efficient communication throughout the school campus
– Incorporation and integration of the local emergency response system and emergency response agencies with the school’s plan
– An annual review and evaluation of the cardiac emergency response plan
– The complete drill schedule has been submitted to the school authorities by September 15 of this school year.
If a drill cannot be completed on the date and time submitted it will be rescheduled within ten (10) school days and the County Manager will be notified of the change.
